Recycled Asphalt
Recycled asphalt driveways are our specialty, built from crushed and screened asphalt millings. We lay them with a paving machine and pack them in with a vibratory roller.

Alma sits on flat, sandy ground, with Hurricane Creek along the east side of town. After a hard summer storm, water stands on that flat ground. Gravel drives go soft and rut where cars turn in. Out in the county, long farm lanes wash out after heavy rain.

The NRCS soil survey rates most of the ground inside the city limits as poorly or somewhat poorly drained. The most common soil in town is Pelham loamy sand. Its water table can rise to the surface, and some low spots pond.
Rigdon sand is common here too, and soil scientists first described it in Bacon County. It sits on flat uplands and is rated somewhat poorly drained. Along Hurricane Creek and its branches, the bottoms are mapped as frequently flooded. FEMA maps most of the town as minimal flood hazard, so the bigger problem is the high water table.
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normal at the Bacon County Airport is about 45 inches of rain a year. The three summer months bring about 16 inches of it. So a drive here has to sit high and carry a crown before any surface goes on. We grade the drive so water runs off both sides, then build a firm base under it.
Alma counted 3,433 people in the 2020 Census and about 3,400 in the 2025 estimate. By Census estimates, the typical home in town was built around 1965. About 8 in 10 homes went up before 1980, and almost none after 2010. That puts most of the paving work in town on old drives.
Close to half the occupied homes in town are rented, so many drives belong to landlords and property managers. A drive laid back then has sat on wet sand for a long time. If the base is still firm, we grade out the low spots and top the drive with millings. A new hot mix asphalt drive is the other choice.
Alma's property maintenance code asks owners to grade a lot so stagnant water does not collect on it. It also asks that drives and parking spaces stay in good repair. A crowned drive on a firm base helps with both.
Bacon County calls itself Georgia's Blueberry Capital, and the Georgia Blueberry Festival comes to Goldwasser Park each June. In the 2022 farm census, the county had 312 farms covering about 77,000 acres. Nearly 7,000 of those acres were in blueberries, and the county ranked second in Georgia for fruit and berry sales. Poultry and eggs sold nearly as much.
Farm trucks run down lanes that cross sandy, often wet ground. On that sand, a skim of gravel soon ruts and washes out. Our farm lane and private road paving starts with a base built up in layers and crowned. The top can be recycled asphalt millings or chip seal.
About 3 homes in 10 across the county are mobile homes. The typical county home was built around 1979. A rural homesite often needs a long drive back from the road and a pad to park on. A drive can start as crusher run or gravel and take a millings top later.
Inside the city limits, start with the City of Alma's code enforcement office. It enforces the building codes and the zoning code. The city code also covers the access drive where a lot meets a city-owned road.
Under that code, the city puts in one 20-foot access drive per parcel, at a spot the owner picks. The city manager's staff approve the location and the material first. Settle that with the city before your new drive goes down, so the two line up.
Pierce Street carries US-1 and US-23 through town, and GA-32 crosses it. Where a lot sits on a state route, the city code says state rules prevail. Any new drive or widening in that right of way needs a GDOT permit first. For a home drive, the application goes to GDOT's District 5 area office for Bacon County.
