Grading
We grade drives and lots before gravel or asphalt goes down. We also re-grade rutted gravel drives and shape a crown so rain runs off.

Chip seal is a surface of stone chips rolled into a coat of hot liquid asphalt. Many people call it tar and chip. All State Trucking, Paving and Construction lays chip seal on driveways and farm lanes around Waycross. The asphalt holds the stone in place and seals the top of the drive.
We are based in Waycross and cover homes and farms within about 50 miles. Chip seal is also one of the surfaces we offer for private road paving. For a free estimate and a written quote, call or text (912) 239-0212.

A chip seal driveway is only as good as the base under it. Weeds and loose dirt come off first. Then the drive gets graded and packed firm, with a crown so rain runs to the sides. That step is the same driveway grading we do before any paving.
Next comes a coat of hot liquid asphalt, sprayed evenly over the base. Stone chips go down right behind it, before the asphalt cools or sets. A roller follows within moments and presses the chips into the asphalt. On a long lane, the work moves in sections, and each one gets its stone before the next is sprayed.
The stone has to be clean and close to one size. Too little asphalt lets chips break loose, and too much can bleed up through the stone. The right amount depends on the stone size and how porous the surface underneath is.
Much of the land around Waycross is flat and sandy, and low spots stay wet after summer storms. A gravel drive on that ground needs regrading from time to time as rain moves the stone. Chip seal holds the top stone down and sheds water off a crowned drive.
That makes chip seal a good fit for long country drives and farm lanes with light traffic. The base below carries the weight of cars and trucks. We lay it for homeowners and farms, and for churches with a long entrance road.
Some owners weigh chip seal against a recycled asphalt driveway, the work we specialize in. That drive is laid with a paving machine and a vibratory roller, and it tightens as it cures. We can quote both, so you can compare them side by side.
Expect some loose stone on a new chip seal. A little extra stone goes down on purpose so every bit of asphalt gets covered. Once the asphalt sets, that extra gets swept off.
Go slow on the fresh surface, and make stops and turns gently. Spinning tires and sharp turns can pull chips out before they seat. Keep the edges clear so rain can run off and the base stays firm.
Over time, sun and traffic wear the top down. When it thins, a fresh coat of chip seal can go over the old one. Soft spots or ruts in the base get repaired before any new coat goes on.
