Paving for the private roads you own and keep up

Private road paving is for the roads owners keep up themselves, such as long rural drives and farm lanes. All State Trucking, Paving and Construction paves them as part of our asphalt paving work around Waycross. We pave church and subdivision entrance roads too. The surface can be recycled asphalt, hot mix asphalt or chip seal.

Crushed recycled asphalt is our specialty. Our own dump trucks haul the millings to the job. A paving machine lays them, and a vibratory roller packs them down. We work about 50 miles around Waycross, from Alma and Baxley down to Folkston.

What We Handle

  • Private roads and long rural drives in crushed recycled asphalt
  • Farm lanes in recycled asphalt or chip seal (tar and chip)
  • Church and subdivision entrance roads
  • Hot mix asphalt from a local asphalt plant
  • Road bed graded with a crown before any surface goes down
  • Millings and hot mix laid in lifts and packed with a vibratory roller
  • Turnouts and turnarounds paved along with the road
  • Material hauled in our own tri-axle dump trucks

Which surface fits your private road?

Recycled asphalt, or asphalt millings, is the surface we specialize in. We lay crushed, screened millings on long rural drives and farm lanes. Once rolled in, the road tightens and cures over the months that follow.

Hot mix asphalt comes from a local asphalt plant and goes down with the same paving machine and roller. It gives a smoother surface that sheds water, and it handles more traffic than chip seal. Georgia DOT's paving guide lists hot mix and chip seal as surfaces for low-traffic roads, such as subdivision streets.

Chip seal, also called tar and chip, leaves a coarse stone surface with good grip. The same guide says it adds little strength to the road under it, so the base has to be firm first. It also warns of loose stone early on.

How we build a private road on South Georgia sand

Around Waycross the land is flat and the soil is sandy. Low spots hold water, and summer storms bring heavy rain. Water under a road softens the base and starts ruts. Ruts then hold more water, and the damage spreads.

So the road bed gets graded with a crown before any surface goes down. The middle sits a little higher than the edges, and rain runs off both sides. A soft road bed may need a stone base first.

A recycled asphalt or hot mix road goes down in lifts. The paving machine spreads one layer, and the vibratory roller packs it before the next goes on. Hot mix gets rolled while it is still hot.

Farm road construction for loaded trucks

A farm lane carries loaded trucks and farm equipment along with cars. That weight rides on the base under the surface. A firm, dry base carries the load, and the surface on top spreads it. Soft spots in the road bed give way first.

Width matters on a long road too. Turnouts give two vehicles room to pass on a one-lane road. A turnaround at the house or the barn lets a truck turn without backing out.

Georgia DOT recommends turnarounds on home driveways so drivers do not back onto the highway. Where a farm drive meets a state route, its driveway rules call for 18 to 24 feet of width. Farther in, the right width depends on the traffic and the trucks your road carries.

FAQ

Private Roads Questions, Answered

Common questions about private roads around Waycross and the rest of southeast Georgia. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (912) 239-0212

Do you build new farm roads?
Yes. We grade the road bed first and add a stone base where the ground needs one. Then the surface you picked goes down on top. A new road through woods gets cleared by a land clearing contractor before we grade.
Can you pave over our old gravel road?
Often, yes. If the gravel bed is firm and drains well, we can top it with recycled asphalt. Ruts and washouts get graded out first, and soft spots get more base. A worn asphalt drive can take a millings top the same way.
Do you pave church and subdivision entrance roads?
Yes, as long as the road is private. We pave church and subdivision entrance roads in recycled asphalt or hot mix. When the road ends at a lot, our church parking lot paving covers that part too.
Do I need a permit where my road meets a state route?
Georgia DOT requires a permit before any construction work inside a state route's right of way. That covers grading there and widening an existing driveway. The property owner, or an agent named in writing, applies at the Georgia DOT area office. On a county road, the county road department says what it needs.
Do you pave county roads or highways?
No. We do not take on highway paving or DOT road work. Our road work is private: long drives, farm lanes and entrance roads. We take on small and mid-size jobs.
What does it cost to pave a private road?
Length and width drive the price, along with the surface you pick. Grading or a stone base for a soft road bed adds to it. Call or text (912) 239-0212 for a free estimate. The written quote covers the material, the hauling and the install.
