Grading shapes the ground so rain runs off a drive instead of sitting on it. All State Trucking, Paving and Construction does driveway grading and land grading around Waycross. We grade drives and lots before gravel or asphalt goes down. We also re-grade gravel drives that have rutted or washed out.
Waycross sits at the center of our service area, which reaches about 50 miles out. Grading is part of our work as an asphalt paving contractor in Waycross. It is the first step under a new drive or lot. Call or text (912) 239-0212 for a free estimate from a grading contractor that also lays the surface.
Tell us about the driveway, parking lot or private road and where it is. We look at the job and put a free estimate in writing.
Ware County is flat Coastal Plain country, and federal soil maps rate most of its ground poorly drained. In much of that sandy soil, the water table can reach the surface. Federal climate normals for Waycross show about 50 inches of rain a year. June and August are the wettest months, at close to 7 inches each.
Water is the trouble on a drive. A federal guide to gravel roads says a surface with no crown collects rain and softens on top. Water held in the surface leads to ruts, and those ruts can reach into the ground below.
Dry spells do their own damage. Traffic pushes stone off the driving surface and out to the edges. That stone builds a ridge that keeps water from running off. On level ground, the guide says, water collects at that ridge and soaks in, which can soften the whole drive.
Driveway grading starts by cutting down the high spots and the washboard. The federal guide says to cut 1 inch or more below the dips. The loose stone then gets mixed and laid back in shape. The guide advises doing this while the stone is damp, since dry stone loosens and drifts.
Next, the stone along the edges gets pulled back onto the drive. Then comes the crown, a straight slope from each edge up to the middle, like a roof. The guide recommends about half an inch of crown per foot, near 4 percent. It says never to go past 6 percent.
Too much crown can make a car slide toward the edge, the guide warns. When a worn drive needs more stone, our dump trucks bring gravel or crusher run once the shape is right. Rolling the shaped surface leaves it denser and smoother.
Land grading shapes a drive or lot before anything goes on top. The federal guide says the base should already have its finished shape before new gravel goes on. That way the new stone goes down at the same depth all across.
We grade the ground before our own surfaces go down. That could be a recycled asphalt driveway or a hot mix asphalt driveway. For churches and small businesses, we grade parking areas so rain runs off the lot. The surface that follows is part of our small parking lot paving work.
We take on small and mid-size grading jobs. Across Ware County and the towns around it, that means drives and lots for homes, farms, churches and small businesses.

We grade the drive or the lot first when it needs it. Then our dump trucks bring the material, and we lay it and compact it.
