How Much Does an Asphalt Driveway Cost in Georgia?
National cost guides put a new hot mix asphalt driveway at about $5 to $13 per square foot installed. A common two-car drive of 600 square feet lands near $3,000 to $9,000 across two of those guides. Replacing an old asphalt drive runs $8 to $15 per square foot, because the old surface comes out first.
Those are market numbers, not our price list. Size moves the total most, per the guides. The base and any old surface to remove push it up from there. Georgia’s own monthly price for liquid asphalt has also climbed this year. Our page on hot mix asphalt driveway paving covers how we build one.
What Does an Asphalt Driveway Cost Per Square Foot?
Cost guides break a driveway into priced parts. Two national guides and the state transportation department publish these figures.
| What is priced | Published range | Kind of source |
|---|---|---|
| New hot mix drive, installed | $5 to $12+ per sq ft | national guide, 2025 |
| New hot mix drive, installed | $7 to $13 per sq ft | national guide, 2026 |
| Replacing an old asphalt drive | $8 to $15 per sq ft | national guide, 2026 |
| Removing old asphalt | $1 to $2 per sq ft | national guide, 2026 |
| Overlay on a sound drive | $3 to $7 per sq ft | both national guides |
| Hot mix by the ton | $100 to $200 per ton | national guide, 2026 |
| Liquid asphalt binder in Georgia | $704 per ton, October 2026 | Georgia Department of Transportation |
| Sealcoat on a typical drive | $282 to $868 per job | national guide, 2026 |
| Crack filling | $1 to $4 per linear foot | national guide, 2026 |
The guides do not agree, so read each range as a rough marker. Where a drive lands depends on what the ground and the old surface need.
What Does an Asphalt Driveway Cost by Size?
Cost guides price a driveway by the square foot, so size drives the total. Both national guides publish totals by size.
| Driveway size | National guide, 2025 | National guide, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 400 sq ft (20 by 20 feet) | $2,000 to $4,800 | $2,800 to $6,000 |
| 600 sq ft (a common two-car drive) | $3,000 to $7,200 | $4,200 to $9,000 |
| 1,000 sq ft | $5,000 to $12,000 | $7,000 to $15,000 |
| 1,200 sq ft (12 feet wide, 100 feet long) | $6,000 to $14,400 | $8,400 to $18,000 |
The 2025 guide’s table stops at 1,000 square feet. Its 1,200 square foot line here is its $5 to $12 per square foot range times the area.
Small jobs cost more per square foot. One guide notes some contractors set a minimum charge of $2,000 or more. Big jobs run the other way. Another guide says the price per square foot often drops as the area grows.
What Moves the Price on a South Georgia Driveway?
Start with thickness. One national guide calls for 2 to 3 inches of compacted asphalt. Under it goes 6 to 8 inches of compacted gravel base. For heavier vehicles, it calls for 3 to 4 inches over an 8 to 10 inch base.
Hot mix sells by the ton, at $100 to $200 a ton in another guide. At 2 inches, a ton covers about 80 square feet. A 600 square foot drive takes about 7 and a half tons at that depth. At 3 inches, it takes half again as much.
Tearing out an old drive adds its own line. One guide puts asphalt removal at $1 to $2 per square foot, hauling and disposal included. Another says curves and slopes add 15 to 30 percent over a straight, flat drive.
Climate and soil count as well. One guide suggests a thicker layer where summers run hot and heavy rain is common. South Georgia’s long, hot, wet summers fit that picture. On flat, sandy Coastal Plain ground, a crowned and graded base that sheds water matters too.
Why Do Asphalt Prices in Georgia Change Month to Month?
Hot mix is stone and sand bound together with liquid asphalt, also called asphalt cement. The Georgia Department of Transportation posts a monthly price for it. The state uses that price to adjust payments on eligible road contracts.
The October 2026 figure is $704 a ton, up from $584 in October 2025. This year’s high was $721 in June. That is the binder alone, not the finished mix.
When the binder price climbs, paving quotes can follow. A cost guide written in 2025 may trail a quote written today. Ask how long a written quote holds.
Does Resurfacing Cost Less Than a New Driveway?
Often it does, when the base is still sound. An overlay adds a fresh layer of hot mix over the old drive. Both national guides put it at $3 to $7 per square foot. One says an overlay saves 20 to 30 percent against full replacement.
An overlay suits a drive in good shape, not one with major cracks or a failing base. One guide points to drives under about 15 years old with less than 30 percent surface damage. Past that, guides point to full replacement.
A worn drive has one more route. Crushed recycled asphalt is our specialty, and we top worn asphalt and gravel drives with it. National guides list recycled asphalt driveways below standard hot mix per square foot. Our millings driveway cost guide breaks down those numbers.
What Does an Asphalt Driveway Cost to Keep Up?
Sealcoat is the main upkeep cost. One national guide puts sealing a typical driveway at $282 to $868 a job, about $575 on average. Another lists $1 to $2 per square foot.
Guides say to wait six months to a year after paving for the first coat. After that, they call for a fresh coat every 2 to 3 years. That comes to four or five rounds of sealcoat in the first 10 years. At the first guide’s range, that is about $1,100 to $4,300.
The same guide lists crack filling at $1 to $4 per linear foot. With that upkeep, guides give an asphalt drive 15 to 30 years. We also handle asphalt driveway sealcoating when that first coat comes due.
How Do You Get a Real Number for Your Driveway?
Every figure above is a published market range or math on one. None of it is a quote for your drive. A real number starts with a look at the drive itself.
All State Trucking, Paving and Construction is based in Waycross and paves driveways within about 50 miles. Hot mix comes from a local asphalt plant, and we lay it with our paving machine and vibratory roller. We give a free estimate and put the quote in writing. The written quote covers the material, the hauling and the install.
